Things We Love: Design Trends

We’ll admit it: at Price Lang Public Relations, we’re design nerds at heart. We eat, breathe and sleep good design, whether it’s a website, social media graphic, event merch or even a business card.

Design is constantly evolving with the trends of the day and it’s hard to keep up. What’s in? What’s out? Don’t worry: we’ve got you covered. Keep reading for a few things we’re loving right this minute.

Bold Minimalism

You’ve heard about minimalism, but have you heard about bold minimalism? Whereas minimalism may be associated with starkness, bold minimalism throws that concept for a loop, cutting through the noise without sacrificing style or fun. Minimalist mainstays like negative space and simplicity combine with bold elements like vibrant colors and expressive typography to produce striking yet direct images. One of our graphic design experts, Scotty O’Daniel, is fond of how this trend can showcase a brand’s creativity and energy while also keeping the main concept distinctly in focus.

Anti-design

On the other end of the spectrum is anti-design, the rule-bending design trend that leans heavily into art territory. A current favorite of Chris Thompson, graphic designer, anti-design goes against traditional design trends by incorporating aggressive typography, clashing colors and messy layouts. Traditional design adheres to a laundry list of rules, from spacing to ratios and scale. Anti-design embraces the “Why not?” of it all, and the approach can produce striking results that feel edgy, chaotic and profoundly distinct. If you’re looking for something unique and thought-provoking, anti-design might be the answer.

Integrating typography

When it comes to designing websites, PLPR Social and Digital Content + Web Developer Richard Hall is a fan of incorporating bold, text-based design choices that say a lot with only a few words. There’s an art form to creating meaningful web design that isn’t bogged down with dense text. By seamlessly weaving in concise but impactful statements throughout webpages, brands have the opportunity to quickly establish what they’re all about without making the user consume swaths of text to get there. While the execution itself can be loud or subtle, this approach is a favorite of ours for its ability to successfully marry clients' needs with a quality end-user experience.
